Over the weekend, as part of the $95 billion package providing funding for aiding Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan which passed by a vote of 360-58 on Saturday, the US House also passed new sanctions on Iran’s oil sector set to become part of a foreign-aid package, putting the measure on track to pass the Senate within days.
Sanctions are almost always a terrible idea (they almost never work - see Russia today as Exhibit A).
And what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If the US truly tried to enforce oil sanctions against Iran, the latter could easily respond by blocking all oil from coming out of the Straits of Hormuz (look at how much damage their proxies, the Houthis, are doing to shipping interests going through this area).
That would cause oil prices to skyrocket. An oil shock is the last thing Biden needs during an election year.
